GYPSUM is high-purity Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate (CaSO4•2H2O) powder.
-Acts as shale inhibitor by maintaining high level of soluble calcium in fresh water systems.
– Utilized to treat carbonate contamination in high pH water-base drilling fluids.
– Does not increase pH of the drilling fluid as is the case with lime.
– Normally used in concentrations of 2 to 5 lb./bbl. for conversion of sodium-base drilling fluids to gyp-base drilling fluids.
-Provides Calcium ions for shale inhibition in gypsum and polymer mud systems, and for converting Bentonitic clays to the Calcium form to prevent problems that might occur while drilling Anhydrite formations.
For carbonate removal, the concentration levels depend on the degree of carbonates present in the drilling fluids
